RBS Achievers of the Year

RBS Achievers of the Year Overview

The program began in 2004 when The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) in conjunction with Charter One and Citizens Bank created the RBS Achievers of the Year Awards to recognize outstanding participants of The First Tee and to help fund their ongoing education after high school (college, community college, vocational school, etc.).  The program rewards deserving students for accomplishments in their daily lives while overcoming difficult circumstances. This scholarship is not based on academic achievements or exceptional golf skills. The goal of the award program is to positively impact youth by rewarding participants for exemplifying one or more of The First Tee Nine Core Values™.

Ten participants from The First Tee network were selected as RBS Achievers of the Year semifinalists.  Two of the 10 winners were named RBS Achievers of the Year finalists and received a $10,000 award for ongoing education. Each of the eight semifinalists received a $2,000 award to be used for ongoing education after high school. The RBS Achievers of the Year Awards included a trip for all 10 winners and their parent/guardian to attend the US Womens Open at historic Oakmont Country Club and attend cultural activities in Pittsburgh, PA in July.

Joseph Brown
The First Tee of Nashville

Joseph Brown, 17, is an Ace-certified participant at The First Tee of Nashville. From early childhood and into his teenage years, Joseph has faced many hardships that more and more young teens today are required to navigate. Living in an unstable home environment as a result of his parents’ divorce was compounded by the financial struggles which led Joseph, his mother and sister to move around constantly. Nevertheless, through all of this, he refuses to let his dreams die, carries an “anything is possible” attitude and is working hard toward achieving his goal of attending college upon high school graduation.

Deloise Daniels
The First Tee of Southern Nevada

Deloise Daniels,16, attends Northwest Career and Technical Academy and is a six-year participant of The First Tee of Southern Nevada.  Deloise’s parents divorced when she was four-years-old and consequently she traveled between Las Vegas and Reno to spend time with both parents. After some time her mother’s health began to deteriorate and Deloise took on the responsibility of caring for both her mother and younger brother. In November 2002, her mother passed away and she and her brother moved to Las Vegas to be with her father and grandparents. This transition took a toll on Deloise emotionally, though she hid her feelings to appear strong for her brother. It was at The First Tee of Southern Nevada that she found a sense of comfort from the staff and other participants, and learned how to manage her emotions. Today, she channels her energy toward golf, education and her everyday life. She believes “all things happen for a reason” and dreams of attending college.

2010 Outstanding International Contributor

Simeon Pompey
The First Tee of Montreal

Simeon Pompey has been an enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer for The First Tee of Montreal for the past eight years. He emigrated from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent to Montreal in 1976 and has been highly involved in the socio-demographic district of Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâces, a community faced with many challenges including discrimination. Simeon has played a key role in developing and preserving of The First Tee of Montreal Satellite Chapter in Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâces. Growing up in the West Indies—where they embrace the adage “it takes a village to raise a child”—led Simeon to subscribe to this philosophy by engaging his community with The First Tee initiatives. Simeon handles several fundraising and promotional initiatives for the Chapter, including a tournament which raises more than $15,000 every year. He is also very active in teaching at the Target level and promotes the importance of The First Tee Nine Core Values to more than 300 children annually.
